First Impressions
When I saw Windy Run Park listed as a top vote-getter in Arlington Magazine’s “Best Hiking Trail of 2016,” I was curious. I checked the official park site and visited on a warm weekday afternoon.
At first glance, I wasn’t impressed. Parking is limited to a small cul-de-sac, and the trailhead begins as a gravel path past a brick building. But what followed surprised me.
Important: Avoid the Right Fork
Shortly after starting, the trail forks at a stream crossing.
I took the right fork over a bridge — and quickly found myself climbing toward a steep cliff overlooking the Potomac River. The views were beautiful, but there are no protective barriers. The descent was rocky and required crab-walking on all fours.
This is not a safe option for hikers with dogs.
Do not take the right fork.
The Safer & Better Route
Instead:
Take the left fork, cross the stream, and stay level with the creek.
This is where Windy Run earns its reputation.
The trail winds alongside the water with multiple stream crossings, shaded woods, and noticeably cooler temperatures in summer. Dogs can cool off in the stream along the way.
You’ll reach a rocky overlook of the Potomac River. If you want a short hike, turn around here. If you want more, continue — the scenery improves.
Extending the Hike
From the overlook:
-
Go right and cross the stream
-
Turn left down steep rock steps (there’s a wobbly pipe handrail)
-
Follow the trail to the Potomac River
-
Turn right onto the Potomac Heritage Trail
Roosevelt Island is about 1.7 miles away. Going all the way out and back totals roughly 5 miles.
What Makes This Trail Special
You’ll pass:
-
Marshland
-
Trickling streams
-
Woods
-
Cliffs
-
Sandy beaches
You’ll likely see turtles, boaters, and waterfowl. Key Bridge and Georgetown are visible in the distance — a unique contrast between wilderness and city.
The Potomac Heritage Trail runs between the river and the George Washington Parkway, so navigation is straightforward.
