Is a Retractable Leash Helping—or Hurting—Your Dog’s Walk?

At DogOn Fitness, we’ve specialized in exercise-focused walks in the Washington, DC area since 2004. We’ve helped thousands of dogs stay healthy, happy, and safe—but one thing we never use on our walks? Retractable leashes.

They seem like a smart solution for exercise, but retractable leashes often backfire. Here's why a standard leash may be the better choice for safety, control, and meaningful movement.

Retractible Leash

1. You Lose Control

Retractable leashes can extend up to 20 or even 30 feet—well beyond the 6-foot limit posted at many parks and trails. If a squirrel, snapping turtle, or off-leash dog appears, you can’t react quickly or pull your dog back safely. You’re simply too far away.

2. They're Prone To Malfunction

These leashes are known for jamming, tangling, and sometimes failing to retract at all. When that happens and your dog is fully extended, it’s no different from being off-leash—except now you’re even less prepared.

3. The Handle Can Be Dangerous

If your dog lunges suddenly, the plastic handle can fly out of your hand. What happens next? That handle bounces along behind them, startling your dog and potentially chasing them into traffic or out of reach. It becomes a scary, dangerous object.

4. You Put Your Dog and Others At Risk

A long retractable leash lets your dog approach others without warning, which can trigger defensive or fearful reactions. A traditional 4—to 6-foot leash helps maintain respectful, safe distances and controlled introductions.

5. It’s Not Real Exercise

Retractable leashes are often marketed as a way to “exercise” your dog while you stand still. However, actual exercise requires structure, movement, and engagement. If your dog has energy to burn and you don't, hire a professional walker who can provide a meaningful workout. That’s what we do best at DogOn Fitness.

Final Thoughts

Retractable leashes might seem convenient—but they often create more problems than they solve. For safe, structured walks and real exercise, skip the retractable and stick with a sturdy leash—and if you need help, we’re here for you.
