5 New Year’s Resolutions for You and Your Dog
Guest Blog by Emily Foster
January is a time to reflect on the past year and think about goals or resolutions for the new year. Many of us make our own resolutions – to travel more, to learn a new skill, etc. Read below for inspiration on resolutions you can make as a dog owner – your pup will thank you for it!
1. Prioritize Training
Whether you focus on tricks, basic obedience, or even try signing up for a class to learn a new sport like agility or flyball, training is an excellent way to bond with your dog and help encourage good habits or deter others. Training also helps to exercise your dog’s mind, which is just as important as physical exercise when having a happy and healthy pet.
2. Increase Grooming Sessions
No one likes a stinky dog – but grooming is also beneficial for being aware of your dog’s body. By increasing grooming sessions, you can familiarize yourself with your dog’s coat and skin health, look for hot spots/ticks/lesions, and help keep your dog more comfortable. Start out by increasing the frequency of how often you brush your dog’s coat, and be sure to introduce and familiarize your dog with grooming tools. Be sure to include lots of praise and treats.
3. Go On A Dog-Friendly Getaway
Everyone likes a vacation – and your dog deserves one too! Why not consider booking a trip and bringing your pooch along? From pet-friendly hotels to dog-friendly hiking trails and beaches, there is so much for you and your dog to enjoy together.
4. Prioritize Your Dog’s Health and Vet Visits
Just like humans, dogs need an annual wellness exam. Make sure to schedule one for your dog this year, but you can even go the extra mile. Consider researching pet insurance for any accidents or illnesses so that you can be assured that if an emergency comes up, you are prepared financially. Also, make sure to get your dog microchipped – or if they are microchipped, be sure their registration is up-to-date and accurate.
